Background of the Study

Gastrointestinal (GI) infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly in developing countries. In Nigeria, diarrheal diseases, which are often the result of infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites, remain a leading cause of child mortality (Ali et al., 2024). Children are particularly vulnerable to GI infections due to their underdeveloped immune systems, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene practices (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). The prevention of these infections involves a combination of interventions such as vaccination, proper sanitation, hygiene practices, and appropriate treatment when infections occur.

Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing gastrointestinal infections by educating caregivers on proper hygiene, providing immunization information, and encouraging behaviors such as handwashing, safe food practices, and proper disposal of waste (Muhammad et al., 2024). Despite the importance of these interventions, there is limited research on the specific role of nurses in preventing GI infections in children within the context of Katsina State’s healthcare system. This study seeks to assess how nurses contribute to the prevention of GI infections in children at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Statement of the Problem

Gastrointestinal infections continue to pose a significant threat to children’s health in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Katsina State. While nurses have a crucial role in prevention through education and health promotion, there is limited evidence on how effectively these interventions are implemented in pediatric care settings. Understanding the role of nurses in preventing GI infections and the challenges they face is vital for improving child health outcomes in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of nurses in preventing gastrointestinal infections among children at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
  2. To assess the impact of nurses’ preventive interventions on the incidence of GI infections in children.
  3. To identify the barriers that prevent nurses from effectively preventing GI infections in children at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in preventing gastrointestinal infections among children at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?
  2. How effective are nurses’ preventive interventions in reducing the incidence of GI infections in children?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in preventing gastrointestinal infections in children in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses’ preventive interventions significantly reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal infections in children at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
  2. There is a positive correlation between nurses’ education and the reduced occurrence of GI infections in children.
  3. Barriers such as insufficient resources and training hinder the effectiveness of nurses’ interventions in preventing gastrointestinal infections.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in pediatric wards at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, and will examine their role in preventing GI infections. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate data on the incidence of GI infections and variations in the availability of resources for infection prevention.

Definitions of Terms

  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Infections that affect the gastrointestinal tract, including diarrhea, dysentery, and other infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
  • Nurses' Preventive Interventions: Actions taken by nurses to educate caregivers and children on hygiene, vaccination, and proper sanitation to prevent gastrointestinal infections.
  • Childhood Mortality: Deaths that occur among children under the age of five, often caused by preventable diseases such as gastrointestinal infections.
